Management at Work - 1470 Words

Case Study: Management at Work 1. Does the pattern of management developments at GE over the last century seem to reflect the pattern suggested by management theory? Explain your answer. The management developments that GE has formulated over the past century appear to reflect the same sequential pattern that has been suggested by the management theory. GE’s first organizational innovation was the establishment of their corporate research and development lab in 1900. I believe this innovation directly germinated out of the advancements that where being made in managerial theory at the time. Frederick Taylor a pioneer of scientific management conducted studies that demonstrated that paying employees with a piecework pay system helps achieve a higher quality and quantity of output from workers, along with improved moral among the groups of workers. Soon after these studies GE in 1930 became the first U.S firm to offer pension and profit sharing plans to their workers. Another sequential connection between GE’s innovations and management theory is the development of the quantitative management perspective, which began in the mid 1940’s. During WWII scientists created mathematical models to help them deploy military resources efficiently during the war. Managers at GE decided to incorporate these mathematical models in their management practices to decide where to efficiently and efficiently distribute their factors of production within the company. For instance, Ms’ Neighbors’ symptoms lasted for less than 6 months. As described, her symptoms began 3 months ago after she lost her job. However, after receiving medical treatment, and finding a new job, her symptoms were gone and she was back to her normal life routine. Furthermore, and based on criterion C and D of schizophreniform disorder, other disorders and conditions must be ruled out before determining the final diagnosis. For instance, the patient should not meet all criteria to be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and depressive or bipolar with psychotic features, as well as not being caused the effects of a substance (drug abuse or medication) or another medical condition. Based on this, before classifying the patient’s symptoms, other mental disorders need to be ruled out. In this particular case, the client could also have been diagnosed with delusional disorder or schizophrenia. As mentioned by the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5 for delusional disorder, individuals must experience one or more delusions with a duration of a month

Family Assessment free essay sample

As a nurse practicing in today’s health care environment it is always important to be very attentive for the needs of the patient and the patient’s family. In order to realize the needs of the patient and the patients loved ones it is often helpful to conduct a family assessment. This assessment was carried out on an urban family which is in the middle income group. Some of the factors which were inferred from the assessment were as follows. In terms of values, health and nutrition, it was found that the members paid much emphasis to this. As s matter of fact, the initial family expenditure was on these three. Health is taken as a vital requirement and all the individuals need to have it. This is the same case with rest. Since most of the members are quite busy all through the day, the family spends some time together in the evening before retiring to bed. Most of the free time is spent having the family together in a relaxed atmosphere (Ritchie, 2012). The family is very concerned for the patient’s needs and overall well-being. They are so concerned about elimination, though the need for exercise and activity is highly acknowledged. The members appreciate and know the need for physical fitness. As such, they try to make sure that they attain it. Nevertheless, they have such tight schedules that they do not get enough time to be engaged in these. This is quite unfortunate. On the cognitive factors, the family is highly receptive. The level attained in the family is based on the importance it attaches to the cognitive development. The children have gone through learning institutions and are still in pursuit of knowledge and education. This is the same case with the parents. They work with the notion that information is power. As it pertains to health care sometimes simple common sense comes into play. Sensory perception is taken as a defining factor of the common sense. However, there is a saying that common sense is not common to all. Nevertheless, this family has greatly attained this sensory perception. Everyone is aware of their surroundings and they are willing to work towards making the family even better. Their self-esteem is also quiet high. Based on the findings from the interview, they have high regard of each other due to the accomplishments they have seen in their lives. Their high esteem is based on the fact that they do not compare themselves with others. Rather, they believe in who they are. This also helps to streamline their roles relationship since everyone understands his/her position in the family and does as is appropriate to their role (IFNA, 2012). Sexuality is a very touchy issue for many people but it is something that often needs to be addressed. The issue of sexuality is a major concern for many, since people tend to have different sexual orientations. This family remains open to the issue of sexuality and everyone has the freedom to choose or decide the path he wants to follow. However, this has to fall in line with the family values which they hold dearly. Lastly, there is the aspect of coping. This family, just like many others, encounters daily challenges. However, it has managed to come through all of them. The reason cited by the members is because they believe in the harmony and unity of a family. Therefore, the problem of one is a problem for all. The family works with the philosophy of one for all and all for one. This is what has made the family stand all along besides the challenges they face (Ritchie, 2012). As it pertains to diagnosis assessment can be very helpful. In diagnosing this family, there are two main nursing diagnoses that can be reached at. These are in line with the International Family Nursing Organization (2012). These two are emotional readiness as well as the status and function. These two seem to be very consistent in this family. They are as indicated in the paragraphs below. The emotional well-being of a person goes a long way in terms of having good physical health. On the emotional status, IFNA (2012) talks of the emotional readiness where the people are ready to change or take up traits that can help the family to function normally. The emotional status has it that a family is ready to take up the health options available. On this aspect, the family proved to be ready for the changes that would benefit it. Most of the members agreed that they were ready to adopt healthier practices that could improve their health. For instance, they acknowledged that they needed to be more vigilant in exercising and physical activity. This was a good status of mind. Sometimes if a person displays destructive behavior there needs to be a willingness to improve and change. Despite the willingness to change, a challenge that faces this family is the status and function. According to the IFNA (2012), this diagnoses has it that a family or individual should have the will to change. However, the circumstances are not favorable. This is the same case that applies with the family. All the members are ready and willing to change and adopt the healthy options. However, they do not have the time in which they can undertake these activities. All they have is the willingness to change but the factors around them do not allow them to. In conclusion, this essay has looked at the family health assessment. It has defined how a family diagnosis can be done and the factors affecting it. This has been followed up by a case study looking at a real family and performing a health analysis on it. From the discussion, it has come out quiet clearly that family assessment should be based on the health and functionality of the family as a unit. For this reason, the family health model comes in handy as an assessment method. This was as seen in the case study which reveals the need for a comprehensive family assessment. It leads to the realization of all factors affecting a family’s health and functionality; hence coming up with proper intervention strategies.

The Town Of Cheltenham Essays - Cheltenham, Cheltenham, Victoria

The Town of Cheltenham PART A ------ Cheltenham is located in the town of Caledon. Cheltenham was found in 1822 by Charles Haines. Cheltenham is located close to the Credit River and the Canadian National Railway known as the C.N.R. The absolute location of Cheltenham is 43 45' North and 79 55' West. The setting of Cheltenham is a valley with the Nigara Escarpment behind it. Cheltenham is located at the south west point of Caledon. Cheltenham is located north of Toronto. Now in 1989 Cheltenham is mostly residential. There is some open space but very little industry now. There is one general store located in the centre of cheltenham. There is a cemetary located opposite of The Fire Hall. Cheltenham was chosen as a town because of the Credit River and the Canadian National Railway. The railway produced trasportation for goods to be delivered to other cities. The cheap efficient rail transportation also ment that Cheltenham's businesses had to compete against goods manufactured by mass production in larger urban centers to the south. Therefore the economy of Cheltenham would rise. The Credit River produce lots of Hydro electric power for the people of Cheltenham. The two main reasons why the site was chosen for a town was the transportation produced by the C.N.R. and the hydro electric produced from the Credit River. Part B ------ The land use at the mill pond area between 1850-1870 in Cheltenham was mostly industrial uses. Most of the industries or buildings were located very close to each other because they all depended on each other. The industries in Cheltenham were located close to the Credit river. The buildings were small compared to the industries we have today. The mill pond cover an area in Cheltenham of one hundred by two hundred meters. There was once a dam and waterwheels in Cheltenham, but they are now destroyed by a flood. Surrounding the mill pond is a small area of grassland. The types of industries in Cheltenham from 1850-1870 were a Flour and grist Mill, a Cooper Shop, a Sawmill, a Slaughter House, a General Store, a Blacksmith Shop, a Tannery, and three hotels. The sawmill, Flour and Grist Mill, and the cooper shop were located right beside each other. The tannery is just a little walk away. They are located so close to each other because they depended on each other. The blacksmith shop, the Orange hall, a store, Henry's hotel, and the general store are located right beside each other. Opposite to them are another store, the Beaver hall, another General store, and two Hotels. They are so close to each other because that is were all the tourists would stay if they came to Cheltenham. The stores would sell food to the people. For example the people could leave their horse at the blacksmith shop to get the shoes fixed while the man could go to the store to get a drink or go to the hotel for a nap. The dam was used to stop the water from leaving the mill pond. The main purpose for the mill pond was to act as a reservoir so the people the Cheltenham had a good supply of water whenever it was needed. The reservoir can also be used as a place for fishing and recreation. These industries were developed by early settlers because the location was very close to a river. When the settlers came to Cheltenham they saw that Cheltenham had a river so they built a saw mill and a flour and grist mill there to take advantage of the water power. The industries were dependant on eact other. Thats why a group of industries would be built beside or very close to each other. The cooper shop could get the wood from the saw mill. The land at the mill pond is also very flat and wet. Since the is a river then the erosion brought by the river would make the soil around in very fertile and damp. The damp fertile soils were good for planting wheat and other products. If the workers at the saw mill worked too hard and were very hot they could always jump into the river for a quick swim to cool off. The main reason why the settlers built industries in Cheltenham was the river located beside it. Part C ------ The village of Cheltenham was a much more important commercial centre in the 1870's than it is today because in the 1870's there was a

Business Ethics

Business Ethics Essay I own a local business that provides Internet access to individuals and businesses, my business is one of four businesses in the local market that provide internet access to both individuals and businesses. Each of the four businesses charges the same price of twelve dollars a month for unlimited dial up services. My businesses breakeven price is seven dollars per customer, so no matter what I must charge it least seven dollars per package in order to cover all my costs. Recently my business and the other three businesses have begun to enter into a price war, to ensure that my business isnt destroyed I will have to develop specific pricing strategies based on certain situations brought upon by my competitors. Demand for my businesses service is often fluctuating because of the constant price changing between my competitors and I. Demand for my service is affected by changes in prices because people are drawn more toward the lowest priced Internet service providers The provider that offers the most bonuses and upgrades along with a strategically low priced internet service, will most likely succeed in bringing in the most customers. Dramatic price drops by my competitors would make it hard for my business to stay afloat because my breakeven price is seven dollars per person, so if they drop their prices to seven dollars or less, then my business would probably have to close because of insufficient profits. My business has three competitors selling the same service as I am, and most any of their business decisions can affect my business in either a positive or negative way. If those businesses are able to drop their prices and offer more extras with their Internet service than my business is able to, it could result in a dramatic loss of business for me and a gain of business for my competitors. The opposite could also occur, my competition could start losing profits and have to raise their prices to maintain operations. In this instance some of their customers might switch to my Internet provider so they wouldnt have to pay higher prices. My customers who were previously thinking about switching to one of my competitors will now decide to stay with my business rather than switching to a provider with fluctuating prices. Having too many of the same kinds of businesses (such as an internet service provider) in the same area, results in a loss of business for everyone because now consumers have so many options of which business to choose form. Where as if my business was in an area where it was the only Internet service provider or it had only one business competing for consumers, I would have a much larger amount of customers. Other than price changing, there are many other methods I could use to attract new customers and retain current customers. One method which some of my competition has used to gain new customers is by offering extras with their service. Extras such as, free personal web pages, free e-mail services, and answering machine services so that dial up users wont have to worry about missing important calls. Another way of attracting new customers would be to use different marketing techniques or perfecting the current marketing techniques that my business uses. I could use different kinds of media to attract specific target markets by using market segmentation. I could use Internet media to my advantage by having a sufficient website promoting my business, Internet marketing would be extremely helpful to my business in particular because anybody who goes to my website would be using some form of Internet which would make them a potential customer to my service. Other ways of attracting new customers would be to target certain groups, for instance my business could market in college campuses that for a certain time period all college students can have their first six months of service at seven dollars rather than the original twelve dollars per month. By doing this I open up the door to potential long-term customers because college students are going to need the Internet for the rest for their lives. By targeting them at a young age my business could try and fulfill their current .

Human Rights Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Human Rights Act - Essay Example The act came into place in 1998 and before that a person who had his right infringed had to go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights to file such a complaint whereby a commission had to consider everyone’s petition in order to determine whether the case is admissible. Most cases failed to go through at this stage. The commission upon admission of a petition would then ascertain the facts and consider whether a friendly statement would suffice and if a friendly statement did not work, the court would come up with a report that illustrated its findings. Individual applicants could also not demand a hearing (Woodhouse, 2001). The act has placed powers on courts to defend the rights of individuals. These rights are important because they form part of our everyday lives. The United Kingdom has now been bound by case law from the European court of Human Rights rather than precedent. The act has created an obligation on the British courts to take case law from the Europea n court of human rights into account and to interpret legislation in a way that is compatible with the convention on human rights. Initially there had been a conflict between the common law courts and the convention court. The courts have always upheld the common law principles and in doing so the courts came up with statutory interpretations (Rt Hon Lord Justice Elias, 2009). The European Convention on Human Rights is an international document and the European Courts of Human rights also applied their own principles in determining a case. This is whereby the convention courts made different interpretations from the British courts, An example of such a conflict is seen in the case of R (on the application of Marper) .vs. Chief Constable of Yorkshire [2004] 1 WLR 2196. Issue was whether the retention of DNA samples of people who had been arrested amounted to an infringement of rights under Article 8 read together with article 14 of the convention or not. The House of Lords ruled that there was no human rights infringement and the convention court held that there was an infringement of rights. The United Kingdom courts now have the power to undermine parliament. The act has influenced the process of policy formulation of the government firstly, through the process of making sure that there is compatibility with the convention rights. Secondly, through litigation whereby a particular policy may be changed or the method in which the policy is delivered could also be changed. Finally, there is the change that is made in behavior whereby the act requires that the behavior of public authorities should conform to convention rights (Department for Constitutional Affairs, 2008). The Human Rights Act provides a way of enforcing compatibility with convention rights. To begin the courts under Section 3 of the Human Rights Act provides that courts will construe legislation in a way that is compatible with the convention rights. A case that illustrates the effect which the a ct has had in the circumstances is that of A and others .vs. Home Secretary [2005] 2 AC 68, whereby the house of lords held that the Anti- Terrorism Act of 2001 was incompatible with article 14 of the Convention of Human Rights by requiring that foreign nationals be detained without trial and thereby it discriminated on ones nationality and even racial status.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn Essay -- revenge, chillingwort

Revenger consumes the soul of the extractor, and leaves him a shell of his former self. Revenge often leads him down an irreversible path that ultimately proves to be detrimental to him. Such acts are especially grave according to Puritan belief, which holds that vengeance belonged only to God. As a Puritan, Nathaniel Hawthorn knew about such believes, and as a master of words, a literary genius who had a deep understanding of human emotions and boundaries, he develops a story whose central theme was revenge. Hawthorne uses The Scarlet Letter to reprimand revenge as a detrimental act never allows a person to be satisfied and in the end, destroys him. He uses Chillingworth’s conversations with others to characterize Chillingworth’s radical transformation from a scholarly person to a devil whose sole purpose was to torment Dimmesdale as retribution for committing adultery with Hester. In his exposition, Chillingworth, a learned man justly demanded that his wife’s fellow sinner speak up and identify himself. This was no doubt a perfectly normal response for a man, who after being in the company of Native Americans for over three years, happens to come to the right place at the right moment to see his wife on the scaffold, humiliated by the overbearing sin of adultery. In his conversation with Hester in jail, Chillingworth made it clear that he did not intend to harm neither Hester nor Pearl. He contended that had he been a more open caring husband, and not devoted his youth to books and the pursuit of wisdom, such an incident would had never occurred. In admitting partial responsibility for Hester’s sins, Chillingworth is characterized as a humble and sagacious man, which Hawthorne employs as the peak from which he strips away Chil... ...intellectual force – seemed at once to desert him† (254). As a man whose sole purpose thereof was to extract revenge, when death moved one-step ahead of him, he had no more purpose in life, and thus too died within the year. Through an analysis of his dialogue with other characters, the reader can witness Chillingworth’s transformation from a leaned man to a vengeful demon. Hawthorne reveals the detriment of revenge, which ultimately drove Dimmesdale and Chillingworth himself to their unintended death, and condemns it as an act that only God can execute. Only Hawthorne could have conjured such an elaborate love story whose central theme is the devastating effects of revenge. This novel serves to remind people of the harmful consequences of extracting revenge without constraint, and how once a person embarked on the path of vengeance, his demise is set in stone.

Is Fanthorpe an Effective Poet? Essay

UA Fanthorpe describes herself as, â€Å"a middle-aged drop out.† She was born in 1929 and is still alive today at the age of seventy-five. Today many people consider Fanthorpe to be one of the most accomplished poets ever. There are factors that lead to her success a poet. One of these factors is that, she viewed much more of the world than most people would view in a life time. She found out first hand what a teacher’s life was like, and also saw what it was like to work in a hospital. It was always her ambition as she was growing up to be a writer; she finally became what she wanted at the age of forty nine when her first piece of poetry was published. Fanthorpe feels poetry is not meant to, â€Å"Attract money or publicity.† She believes poetry is supposed to â€Å"stay honest and independent†. Poetry â€Å"can’t do more,† than stay honest and independent â€Å"because it hasn’t the status† of other forms of writing. â€Å"All a poet can do is warn†, which is what Fanthorpe, does powerfully. Over her life time she has written a number of successful poems, for instance, â€Å"Not My Best Side,† and â€Å"Half-Past Two,† and a variety of other remarkable poems. In my eyes, the two poems that she wrote which demonstrate her skills most effectively are, â€Å"Not My Best Side,† and â€Å"You Will Be Hearing From Us Shortly.† Both these poems display her skilful talent in using the other voice, along with creating a large amount of emotion. In the poem â€Å"Not My Best Side,† the reader perceives her skill in using the other voice, by creating the different voices for the Dragon, the Maiden, and the Knight. She portrays the dragons’ emotions as a wounded gentleman, discouraged because his â€Å"victim was so unattractive as to be inedible† The dragon is displayed very much against the stereotype of itself. She presents him as an intelligent young man who is more worried about his image and appearance than anything else. When having his portrait painted, the artist â€Å"did not give him a chance to pose properly.† He was upset because the painter â€Å"left off two of his feet.† The dragon, commenting on his death, says, â€Å"I should have liked a bit more blood† This understatement contradicts the violent reputation of a dragon, making the poem like an amusing fairy tale in that the dragon knows he will rise again. Fanthorpe depicts the princess as a small, chatty, plain yet slightly pretty woman. She in addition to the dragon does not fit the stereotype of a princess in distress. Instead of wanting to be rescued by the noble knight, â€Å"to be honest, I didn’t much fancy him.† â€Å"I quite took to the dragon.† St. George, who is known in other poems as a heroic knight who rescues the princess and carries her away to marry her, living happily ever after, is revealed as being â€Å"ostentatiously beardless†, and the princess worries that he may â€Å"have acne, or blackheads, or bad breath†. He thinks very highly of his armour, his horse, and himself. The author destroys the stereotype view of all the characters in the tale of St. George slaying the dragon. Instead of being the noble knight, he appears as a male chauvinist, whilst the princess, instead of being helpless, is an opinionated girl who speaks her own mind. Fanthorpe also frequently creates humour in the poem, for example when the princess says, â€Å"that green sexy tail† â€Å"You Will Be Hearing From Us Shortly,† is another show of why she is such a successful poet today. There is a great deal of skill involved in creating this masterpiece. Whilst the voice of the interviewer is the only one she uses, in contrast to â€Å"Not My Best Side†, she still makes it possible for the reader to understand and follow the poem. She causes the reader to dislike the arrogant personnel officer, and to feel sympathetic towards the man whom is being interrogated. Fanthorpe likes to open poems with a sentence that gets the reader’s attention immediately, and causes an interest in the character. â€Å"Once upon a school time, he did Something Very Wrong†, causes the reader to wonder what he did, in the poem â€Å"Half-past Two.† â€Å"Do you feel adequate to the demands of this position?† is a line which certainly would not make the interviewee at ease and relaxed, but creates tension, again causing the reader to wonder what will happen next. Although the reader cannot know what answers the interviewee gives during his interview, he still finds out many facts about him, which leads the reader to feel compassion and empathy towards him. We see the age of the man in a very subtle way. The interviewer is not impressed by the age of the interviewee: he wanted someone, â€Å"†¦with precisely the right amount of immaturity.† This little passage shows that the person that was being interviewed was too old for the job. At first we see the interviewer as a polite and concerned man, but as we near the middle of the poem we see that he is quite the opposite. An inappropriate remark that the interviewee makes is on the looks of the person that is being interviewed. They interviewer had just said something about looks being a delicate matter when he brings it up just in more detail, â€Å"You do appreciate this work involves contact with the actual public.† This shows that the interviewer not keen on the appearance of the person that is being interviewed. The point Fanthorpe makes very well is that the proud, pompous interviewer prejudges the man seeking employment. He criticizes his looks, accent, background, age, and number of children; not giving him a fair interview based on his qualifications. There are no major weak points in the style of Fanthorpe’s poetry. Not only does she display her use of the other voice, but she also creates humour and makes her views on society today known. This is also shown in â€Å"Dear Mr Lee†, in which the student loves reading, but fails exams, because she disagrees with the exam board, and cannot meet their expectations. Fanthorpe creates ample amounts of emotion and feeling in all her poems as we covered briefly. Her poems are written in an irregular form, with no rhyme scheme, yet her exceptional use of words makes her poetry very interesting.
